Chapter Seventeen
Jameth
I should have checked its body. Should have made sure my tail penetrated the crel layer of its skin; the part that, when struck, sends its own venom to its heart that stops it beating. It seems all I managed to do was get through to the melioa instead, knocking it out temporarily until its venom was processed by its system. How could I be such a fool? Especially since this isnât my first time dealing with a parohl.
Strangely, it dodges me, lunging instead for Wren. Itâs uncharacteristic. I swing out with my tail, wincing. Iâm sensitive from having it inside my mate.
My tail usually feels almost nothing when tensed. But it feels more than it would if I hadnât just had it inside someone.
This parohl seems to have tougher skin than average, and a stupid thought comes to me that it could be a peparohl, a long-extinct gentically modified mutation that can be trained, is tougher than average, and is harder to kill.
But thatâs impossible.
âJameth!â Wren chokes out while cowering behind a tree that the parohl is so desperately trying to get around. âWatch out for its tail!â
I/at the skin of the body, but itâs wriggling so much I canât get in deep. I call, âTry to get back to the vehicle we were traveling on! Iâll try to take it deeper into the woodsâtry to kill itââ
I donât know why I think sheâll listen to me. She didnât run last time, and I donât hear her footsteps now.
I donât hear much of anything but the blood rushing in my ears with every slash of my tail through the parohlâs hard flesh. I wish it wasnât so large and dark so I could see where my tail penetrated each time, getting through to the same place again and again.
With a groan, I blast it with my watch, but that does nothing but bounce off. As the parohl opens its jaws, I send a blast directly into the soft flesh inside its mouth. The parohl emits a scream and falls backwards, writhing in agony.
While itâs down, I blast it again every time itâs mouth opens while I hack away with my tail at the closest part of it.
Layer by layer, I get through its skin until I get to the crel. Blood pumps from it, and its venom is sent straight to its heart.
With a deep breath, I turn to the tree Wren is hiding behind and say, âOkay. Now itâs actually dead.â
She runs into my open arms.
Iâve encountered a lot of sticky situations in my life, and Iâve never been this afraid. Iâve never had something I want to protect more than myself, and having it now is petrifying.
I swallow. It seems Iâve lost my ability to speak.
âCome on,â she says. âLetâs find our clothes and get out of here. Iâm sure the people in the second capital are expecting you.â
I nod, some of the fog in my mind clearing.
Iâm not sure Iâm in the right state of mind to speak once Iâm dressed and back on the airrider.
